The chawan is the traditional Japanese tea bowl used for preparing and drinking matcha. Each piece is handcrafted and carries its own shape, texture and character.

Rather than searching for the perfect bowl, we invite you to choose the one that naturally calls to you. The bowl you return to often becomes part of your daily ritual. 

This unique chawan is handcrafted in the Hagi-yaki (萩焼) tradition. A regional style of Japanese ceramics that originated around the town of Hagi in Yamaguchi Prefecture, after which it was named.

Hagi Ware

Since its development over 400 years ago, Hagi-yaki has remained highly valued within the traditional aesthetics of Japanese tea ceremony. Some of the oldest Hagi-yaki pieces have been designated National Treasures of Japan. While it is best known for tea bowls and tea ceremony utensils, Hagi potters also create tableware, sake ware and, more recently, sculptural works.

Artist

Hagien Yoshida (1940–1987), born in Hagi, began studying pottery at the age of 15 under Kyusetsu Miwa, a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property designation. 

In 1968, he became an independent potter in Hagi, building his Hirakikama kiln, known as Tama Takashiyama-gama. He tragically died at the young age of 46.
